THE CULTURAL RICHES OF NAN

TUCKED away in the remote north, the tiny provincial capital of Nan, with its population of around 25,000, sees few visitors, yet those who venture there are rewarded with a surprising diversity of cultural riches. Nan’s treasure trove includes superbly crafted Buddha images, vibrant murals and elegant temples. This has led to the province being listed tentatively as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

THE end-season party for the 12th Samui Pool League will take place at the Cooler Bar in Bangrak on July 20, league chairman Nick announced.

Nick also announced in the league’s website that each team captain will be given an envelope for beer tokens to be used at the host bar during the affair.

League sponsor Makro, according to Nick, has donated Bt10,000 worth of free food for the buffet while Fluid Asia will be bringing along some crates of Blond Ice for free distribution.

Bar Asia, which was unbeaten in 13 games compiling a total of 9 wins and 4 draws, emerged on top of the elite Division 1 and will be crowned champion during the end-season party.

The Soi Reggae-based team amassed a total of 31 points, five more than International Bar, which will receive Division 1 runnerup honors.

International ended the season with 7 wins, 5 draws  and 1 loss and a total of 26 points, while Chaweng-based Sportsman’s Bar was third with 7 wins, 1 draw and 5 losses.

In Division 2, with one match remaining, the frame differences for the teams contesting promotion are as follows: Chillin Bar, +56 (two results outstanding); On’s Live Wire, +46; and Moby Dicks, +46.

The Lamai-based Chillin Bar and Sportsman’s, located in Chaweng, are contesting the Makro Knockout Cup championship played in between the regular league schedule.
In Division 3, Jack’s Bar is the champion with 10 wins, 0 draw and 1 loss in 11 games.
In a related development, the league website also announced that the chairman and the secretary are stepping down at the end of the season.

The chairman is responsible for collecting results sheets and handling complaints, while the secretary, a position currently held by Sean Ahern, is responsible for scheduling, database management and website updates.

Anyone interested in taking on these roles are asked to come to the meeting or contact the organizers through the website.

The organizers also announced the guidelines for the coming 13th season.

Teams not participating in the league’s next season should advise or contact them through the league website.

Any bar interested in joining the league next season are also asked to let them know as soon as possible.
