KOH Samui did not escape the usual deaths taking place because of road accidents during the 7-day Songkran festival. Car and motorbike accidents reportedly increased and authorities reported two persons killed and 81 injured.An official said the accidents mostly involved motorbike drivers and the main cause of accident was drunk driving. Twelve people were injured April 10 from the road accidents, while six were hurt and received treatment at Koh Samui Hospital on April 11. Seven people went to Koh Samui Hospital on April 12 for treatment, while two others went to Bandon Hospital. On April 13, more road accidents happened as this was the peak of the celebrations, when people drove out in their motorbikes or cars to splash water on one another. It was reported that a Thai man died from a road accident on that day, while 32 others, including and foreigners, were injured. On April 14, 11 people were admitted to the hospital after meeting road accidents. Reports said, a male foreigner was also killed from a road accident, while three were injured on April 15. Officials said the death toll was equal to last year’s record, but the number of injuries decreased, compared with last year’s 109 injuries. |
