A mother and son were violently attacked in Maenam recently by an orchard worker they hired two months ago. Police said the son, Saknan Lorwong, 25, was killed in the attack while his mother, Niab Sookho, 61, was seriously injured and taken to the Bangkok-Samui Hospital. The suspect, 21-year-old Chibel Chawajit of Nakhon Srithammarat province was arrested hours after the attack. Policemen and 20 other volunteers found him walking on the beach at Ban Bang Por in Ban Tai, two kilometers from the crime scene. The suspect, called Bee for short, told police he stabbed mother and son for systematically insulting him. He disclosed that two months ago he begged Niab to let him stay in an abandoned construction shelter across from the mother-and-son’s house. Niab agreed, Bee said, and even hired him to tend the family’s fruit orchard at Bt200 a day with free food. Bee said every time he went to the house to get his food, he would hear Saknan say something bad against him. He could not take the systematic insult, he said, so he attacked Saknan with a knife. When Niab saw the attack, she ran outside of the house and started shouting for help. He said he went after her to stop her from getting help from neighbors. A background check, police said, showed Bee had been arrested for stealing and later for rape in Nakhon Srithammarat province before coming to Samui. -- CA |
